Marriage

• The ceremony should take place in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
• Ardas (the requesting prayer) is said and then there is a brief explanation of the importance of the ceremony.
• The lavan (marriage hymn) in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji contains four verses and describes the stages in two becoming one. The Sikh ideal of marriage is 'one spirit in two bodies'.
• The bride and groom walk around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji after the first verse is read by the granthi (person reading from Guru Granth Sahib Ji) and then sung by the ragis (musicians and singers).
• After they have completed the first round, they bow their head before the Guru Granth Sahib Ji to show that they have accepted the teaching.
• The same process is repeated for the remaining three verses.
