This is Christmas

9 Readings for a Christmas Act of Worship: 7th Reading

Not far away, shepherds who lived out in the fields were keeping watch over their flock at night. An angel from the Lord suddenly appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone all around them; they were scared stiff.

But the angel said to them, 'Don't be afraid, for I have come to tell you some wonderfully happy news, great news for everyone. Today a Deliverer has been born to you; he is the Royal Lord, born in David's own town. Here is how you will recognise him: a baby, swaddled like a peasant's child, lying in a manger.'

Suddenly a huge contingent of the heavenly army were there with the angel, praising God, and saying -
Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
and on earth peace among people
who are his delight.
Once the angels had left them and gone back into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, 'Come on, let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about'. So they hurried along, and they found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Having looked, they made known what they had been told about this child. All who heard were amazed at the shepherds' news.

Meanwhile, Mary kept it all to herself, and quietly pondered what had happened.

As for the shepherds, back they went, praising God and giving him glory for all they had heard and seen; it was all just as they had been told it would be.
