The Lord, Israel's God, deserves our praise, because he has come among his people, and made it possible for them to be set free. He has raised up a man with the power to save us, one of King David's descendants - just as he always said he would, when he spoke through the words of his holy prophets - a man to deliver us from our enemies and from the hands of all who grudge us life. What he has done crowns all the kindness which he showed to our forefathers, and proves that he has not forgotten his holy Covenant - the oath he swore to our father Abraham that we should be released from the grasp of our foes, and from the fear of them, in order to offer him holy worship and honour him by our manner of life as long as we live. As for you, my little son John, you shall be called a prophet of the Supreme God, for you shall herald the coming of the Lord and clear the way before him. You shall tell his people about their deliverance and about the forgiveness of their sins through the mercy of our God. So the heavenly day will dawn upon us, shining on those who sit in the darkness of death's shadow, and guiding our feet into the way of peace.
