Buckfast Abbey

Buckfast AbbeyBuckfast Abbey welcomes modern day pilgrims by the thousand. Most arrive by car or coach, and are able to spend time in the gardens, eat a good meal, or join in a church service with the monks who live there. Benedictine monks lived and worshipped at Buckfast from the 11th century until 1539 when the Abbey became derelict on the orders of King Henry VIII. At the beginning of this century a small group of monks came from France, determined to rebuild the monastery as far as possible in its original form. It was a vast undertaking, and the Abbey was finished by 1932. Some of the stained glass was made in the Abbey's own workshops.

The Pilgrims' Way arrived at Buckfast on Thursday 29th May, and a service was held with the monks and local people in the Abbey.
