WORSHIP AND CELEBRATION
Gurdwara
- Gurdwara means 'door to the Guru'. Any place where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept becomes a Gurdwara.
- A Gurdwara must have a Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) hanging outside it.
- A Gurdwara must have a langar hall where langar (free vegetarian food) is served.
- Anyone can visit a Gurdwara, whatever their race, religious belief or gender. However, people who are drunk or smoking cannot attend while they are doing those things.
- The Gurdwara is used for religious functions, for daily worship as well as particular festival times. It is also used for religious functions for birth, marriage, amrit (initiation), and death. It is open each day, although for convenience in Britain, most Sikhs will visit on a Sunday. In line with the teaching of meeri-peeri (worldly power and spiritual power) the Gurdwara is used for social functions and often includes a library, classrooms for Punjabi and other subjects, and newsletters including marriage lists. There are often football and martial arts facilities offered as well.
