LIVING THE SIKH LIFE
Death
- Deliberate mourning is forbidden and the bereaved are encouraged to accept God's Will.
- A dead person should be cremated, but other means of disposal of the body are acceptable if this should prove difficult.
- Kirtan Sohila (the bedtime prayer) and Ardas (the requesting prayer) is said at the time of cremation because just as one arises from sleep, so one arises from death.
- The ashes should be immersed in running water because erecting a memorial is contrary to Sikh belief. The soul has moved on, and if God wills, people will be re-united in God's love.
