What happened at pentecost...

At Pentecost Jesus followers, or disciples, learnt about a new way in which God could work in their lives, giving them the power, or confidence to do things they had never dreamt of. In this way they had a new understanding of God. Jesus' disciples also learnt something very important about themselves. They learnt how to let God change them and work in their lives. They gained a new understanding of what it means to be a disciple, or a follower of Jesus.

At Pentecost What happened in that room at Jerusalem is difficult to put into words. It's a good example of when there aren't the right words to describe fully what happened. The effect of what happened is easier to describe - the disciples had a new understanding of mystery.

You might use this as an opportunity to think about - and perhaps to talk about - occasions when:
  1. you have been 'lost for words' (when they were; your feelings which couldn't be put into words)
  2. you may have changed (when something very special happened and it made you change, perhaps without realising until afterwards when you thought about it or others noticed that you had changed)

You might find out about some other people whose lives have been changed by a special occasion or experience. For example:

Thomas Barnardo (from The Spartacus Internet Encyclopedia of British History)

Kriss Akabusi

Remembering Archbishop Oscar Romero

Lord Shaftesbury (from The Spartacus Internet Encyclopedia of British History) and Lord Shaftesbury and ragged schooling

Mother Teresa of Calcutta Center (follow 'Mother Teresa' and 'Short Biography')

Personal Quests: Nigel Rawlinson's story from The Belief File: Christianity in Britain.

Wendy's story from St Margaret's Church, Colchester
