Background

You can learn more about Pentecost and Jerusalem, where the Holy Spirit came to Jesus' disciples, by using the Web. These links provide some useful background information.

The Jewish Festival

Remember Pentecost comes 50 days after the second day of Passover.

It is the time of the Festival of Shavuot (Feast of Weeks). This is the celebration at the end of the grain harvest. It is also when Jews remember the giving of the Law or Ten Commandments.

Tablets Virtual Jerusalem's section on Shavuot has some interesting information about Jewish celebrations in the past and today.

Shavuot on the Net also tells you about the festival and customs associated with it.

Jerusalem and Israel

The Jerusalem Mosaic will help you find out about Jerusalem at different times in its long history.

Christians believe Jesus is the Messiah - the Saviour of the world. Jews believe that the Messiah is yet to come. Both the country Israel, and its capital Jerusalem, are important to Jews and Christians.

1998 was the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the modern state of Israel. For Jews it is their Promised Land. You can find out more about Israel's Fiftieth Anniversary Celebrations in 1998, by visiting Israel at 50 and beyond.
