This is Christmas

Music

Music is an important part of celebrating Christmas - you may be one of those who plays or sings at a carol service. The word 'carol' means a joyful hymn or religious song. In the past it seems carols may have been associated with dancing; some people would call them the 'folk music' of Christianity.

When you explore these music sites keep in mind why the songs are listed. You could divide them into three groups:

A] those telling part of the story of Jesus' birth;
B] those encouraging us to think about the meaning of Christmas;
C] those which are about being happy, perhaps about the food we eat or about telling traditional stories which we associate with Christmas - but which are not directly connected with the birth of Jesus.

Some of the sites also tell you about the composers of the Christmas music and the history of the carols.
